Allemand Die Welt ist unter die Herrschaft der Shinra Electric Power Company geraten, eines skrupellosen Megakonzerns, der dem Planeten zwecks Energiegewinnung das Leben entzieht.
In Midgar leistet eine Rebellengruppe namens Avalanche Widerstand gegen den Konzern. Cloud Strife, ehemaliges Mitglied der Eliteeinheit SOLDIER und inzwischen Söldner, hilft den Rebellen. Ihm ist nicht klar, dass er dadurch in einen epischen Kampf um das Schicksal des Planeten geraten und ihn früher oder später seine Vergangenheit einholen wird.
Dieses Spiel ist eine Portierung des originalen Spiels FINAL FANTASY VII.
